Ever since the church started as a house group in 1984 we’ve never had a place to call our home. In the mornings we’ve met in the Community Centre (Old Academy), Ellon Primary, the Kirk Centre and as of Aug 2015, in the new Ellon Academy. In the evening we’ve primarily met, and continue to meet, in Castlepark Community House. We’ve been in the Guide Hut, Victoria Hall and a few others if other outreaches that the church supports such as the foodbank are included. These have met the need of the church as it has grown with all having ample space for the many Sunday School classes although we have had to be adaptable on many an occasion. The main midweek activities have met in various places.
The church returned to Ellon Community Centre in 2009 from the Kirk Centre and was very grateful for the facilities made available which included rooms for the various Sunday School classes, creche etc. By God’s goodness we saw a significant increase in numbers since 2011 which meant that we were getting close to filling it on a Sunday, and stretching it on various special services. With the move to the new campus there is more room though there are new challenges to meet, including the ongoing weekly transportation of significant amounts of AV equipment, creche material. The Parent & Toddlers group leaders transport heavy boxes about on a weekly basis too.
We’re truly grateful and thankful to God and to the various organisations that have allowed us to use their premises for their use. But, as the church has grown, and the various ministries have expanded, we really feel that God is calling us to push doors, and to keep on pushing, with a view to having our own premises that would enable us to continue to serve God, and the community of Ellon, in ways that only He knows.
To this end a building fund and building group was set up in 2011 and, following a recent giving day in November 2015, the fund now stands at over £360,000.
House prices are very high in this area due to the proximity to Europe’s oil capital, Aberdeen, so it is quite possible that we may need to raise well over £1M so the project is steeped in prayer, recognising that we need a miracle from God for this to become reality. But, as Ephesians 3 says “ Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
If you’d like to be part of this project please get in touch. We are very appreciative of any support – prayer, practical or financial.
Update July 2016
Ellon Baptist Church is delighted to announce that after almost thirty years in Ellon, it now has its own address. On Friday, 24 June 2016, EBC received the keys to Birness, Ythan Court, Ellon. At this early date, there are no clear plans of how it will use the house, but the church is exploring ways it can use the premises to better serve God and the community.
